Alexandria Reds Fall 4-2 to District Elite FC, Shift Focus to Playoff Push

WASHINGTON D.C. — The Alexandria Reds’ run of momentum hit a speed bump, falling 4-2 to District Elite FC in a back-and-forth matchup.

Despite falling behind early, the Reds showed character, twice fighting their way back to within a single goal. However, defensive errors in transition ultimately proved to be the difference. Following the result, Alexandria sits in fourth place in the NPSL Mid-Atlantic Conference standings as the playoff race intensifies.

The Reds opened the match on the front foot, pressing high and utilizing quick combinations to pin District Elite in their own half for the first 10 minutes. But against the run of play, the visitors struck first. In the 14th minute, a costly turnover during Alexandria's build-up play gave District Elite a fast break. The Reds' goalkeeper Santino Inkpen parried the initial shot, but the rebound was quickly put away to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

The conceded goal disrupted Alexandria’s rhythm, and District Elite capitalized on the shift in momentum. In the 42nd minute, a through ball split the Reds’ defensive line, allowing the District Elite striker to slot a low effort into the bottom corner, doubling the deficit to 2-0.

Refusing to enter halftime quietly, the Reds engineered a crucial response in stoppage time. After winning a physical tussle in the midfield, Aiden Zarate gained possession and played a perfectly weighted pass to James Vandehei on the right side. The striker remained cool under pressure, slotting the ball into the bottom-left corner to cut the lead to 2-1 at the break.

The second half saw Alexandria pushing aggressively for an equalizer. Inkpen kept hopes alive in the 55th minute with a spectacular point-blank save to deny a clear scoring opportunity. However, in the 67th minute, another miscue out of the backline was punished by District Elite, who capitalized with a clinical strike into the roof of the net to make it 3-1.

Alexandria continued to fight, setting up a dramatic finish in the 77th minute. Executing a short corner routine, the ball eventually found Julian Dix at the top of the penalty area. Dix unleashed a powerful effort that threaded through a maze of bodies and found the back of the net, narrowing the scoreline to 3-2 and completely shifting the energy on the pitch.

As the Reds committed numbers forward in search of a late equalizer, District Elite exploited the open space in transition. In the 82nd minute, a counter-attack down the left flank resulted in a near-post finish, sealing the 4-2 victory for the visitors. Inkpen was then forced into a massive double-save in the 85th minute to prevent any further damage.

Head Coach Nick Conklu was candid about the uncharacteristic mistakes but praised his squad's resilience at the end of an exhausting stretch of three matches in seven days.

"There was a common theme of individual mistakes and errors today, just giving them opportunities where we're overplaying," Conklu said. "But I like the fight and character we showed to keep pushing and competing, even when we faced the adversity of conceding. We brought ourselves back within reach twice."

Despite the loss, Conklu emphasized the bigger picture for his squad as they navigate a grueling schedule and hunt for the postseason.

"We got six points out of the nine in these three games in seven days, which is definitely a challenge in terms of the minutes played on the players' bodies," Conklu added.

"That has put us in a position to continue competing and secure our spot in the playoffs. We have to focus on what we can control, stick to our identity, and take it one game at a time."

The Reds will look to bounce back and solidify their playoff positioning when they travel to face Virginia Dream FC on Wednesday, June 24.
